Dallas police arrested a convenience store clerk after officers say he fatally shot a man stealing beer from his north Oak Cliff store on Wednesday night.
Delon Montreace Johnson Jr., who turned 24 Thursday, was booked into the Dallas County jail on a murder charge.
His bail has not been set, and it was unclear whether he has an attorney. Police responded about 10:50 p.m. to the 7-Eleven in the 400 block of North Zang Boulevard, just east of the Bishop Arts District, after Johnson called 911 to report the shooting.
According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, two men walked into the store and each grabbed two 12-packs of beer, then left without paying.
Johnson followed them into the parking lot to tell them to put down the beer, then fired five shots at their pickup as they drove off, police said.
The vehicle came to a stop about a mile to the south, at Zang and West Clarendon Drive. One of the pickup’s occupants, Kenneth Collins, was struck in the neck. He was taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center and pronounced dead.
The second man, who has not been identified, fled before officers arrived, police said. Johnson was taken into custody at the convenience store and admitted to the shooting, the affidavit says. Authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting.
