Shocking footage shows a 4×4 driver filming himself ‘dangerously’ close to cyclists while berating them for riding in the road next to a cycle lane. Driver Andrew Cudd films the cyclists from behind the wheel of his moving car while branding them ‘Saturday w******’ and ‘t****’ for not riding in the designated lane.
While holding his phone in one hand he is seen using the other to repeatedly beep his horn when he sees a cyclist on the road near Richmond Park, south west London. Under current rules if you are caught using a mobile phone at the wheel you will get three penalty points and a fine of £60, this will increase to six points in 2017.
Drivers who travel too closely to cyclists can be prosecuted under dangerous driving laws if their actions are deemed severe enough. Beeping your horn without a good reason can see you slapped with a £30 fine.
The landscape gardener from Wimbledon also appears to make a homophobic slur aimed at what the riders are wearing, describing one as clad in ‘a swimming hat and gay shorts’.
Disgruntled Mr Cudd then confronts a group of cyclists when they stop at traffic lights. He shouts: ‘What’s wrong with the cycle lane? Why don’t you use the cycle lane that’s provided?’, before making fun of one rider who nearly topples off his bike while trying to get away.
The video was originally posted by Mr Cudd on Facebook on Saturday, where it was viewed by more than 50,000 times before he deleted it. But the footage was picked up by cycling campaigners who accused the business owner of endangering lives and using a mobile while driving, sparking a heated debate online.
There is no law which states cyclists have to use a cycle lane and many riders do not because they fear that they might hit a pedestrian.
Richmond cycling campaign posted: ‘Not only is Mr Cudd wrong in a number of his assertions, but what appear to be a number of close passes, and his clear admission to be using his mobile phone while driving should surely result in some police attention.
‘We want the roads in our area to be safe for everyone, however they’re getting around, and whatever they choose to wear – no one should be exposed to danger or poor road behavior like this.’
The video was filmed on the same stretch of road where master butcher Jason Wells launched a furious rant at a cyclist in June last year.
