Deontay Wilder Is BACK! Sends Opponent To The Shadow Realms In First Round

Deontay Wilder makes thunderous return with vicious first-round knockout of Robert Helenius - CBSSports.com

Deontay Wilder is back.

After a hellacious trilogy of fights with Tyson Fury that saw Wilder suffer the first two losses of his professional career, “The Bronze Bomber” proved that he still has something left in the tank with a devastating first-round knockout of Robert Helenius at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Saturday.

In true Deontay Wilder fashion, the end came courtesy of one vicious punch. The former WBC heavyweight champion has put his name back into the mix in the division.

“Who’s next?” Wilder asked after needing to land only three punches before finishing the job. “I’m down for whatever. Whether it’s Andy Ruiz, Oleksandr Usyk or whoever. I’m back.”

The 36-year-old Wilder improved to 43-2-1 and collected his 42nd knockout. He was facing a former sparring partner who was on a run of his own with a pair of knockouts over Adam Kownacki before finding himself on the canvas and staring at the lights courtesy of a Wilder right hand.

Although Wilder came up short against Fury, the power remains undeniable. He is easily one of the most devastating punchers in heavyweight history.

What the future holds for him is in the air. Fights with Ruiz and Usyk, or a megafight with Anthony Joshua, are all possible.

One thing is for sure, though: the Bomb Squad still has something to say.

Round 1: Helenius moving forward early as Wilder pumps the jab. Right hand to the body from Wilder. Helenius gives him one back.

Wilder misses a massive overhand right. Wilder with a combination and Helenius shoves him into the ropes. Right hand from Wilder and Helenius is dead. It’s over.

Caleb Plant ends blood feud with Anthony Dirrell with brutal 9th-round knockout

11:56 p.m.: The fight hasn’t been pretty as it heads to the 10th, but Dirrell has stayed in it. Plant is clearly ahead with his crisp combinations and bodywork, but there was an expectation that he’d pour on the offense at some point.

It hasn’t happened, and maybe Plant is fine with just winning a decision. Well, that changed pretty quickly: Plant unleashed a left hand that caught Dirrell flush and knocked him smooth out. That was absolutely brutal. Wow.
